Paper or Plastic?

Growing Global Movement to Ban Plastic Bags

Large grocers must limit plastic bags

· Countries that have banned or taken action to discourage the use of plastic bags include Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Italy, South Africa and Taiwan. Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India, also has banned the bags.

Are you better off single?By Dawn Yanek Attention, unmarried people of America: You can splurge on a fancy new wristwatch without having to explain yourself. You can stay out till 3 a.m. without having to phone home. You can leave the toilet seat up. In fact, there are many, many ways that single life rocks, though you may forget that fact when your relatives are grilling you about settling down.
Not only do you have the freedom to do anything you want—it’s also the best time in history to be flying solo. The marriage rate has declined nearly 50 percent since 1970, according to the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University, and right now, there are approximately 100 million singles in the U.S. And there’s strength in those numbers: “Today’s choose-to-be singles differ from the poor-me singles of past generations; there’s less of a stigma attached to being single, ” says Jerusha Stewart, author of The Single Girl’s Manifesta. “Singles are traveling, buying homes and doing everything they want to—you don’t have to get married anymore to live your life with style.” Want more specifics on why you should celebrate being single? Here, 10 fascinating benefits to being unmarried: →仔細想想,最近大家都在討論這個問題,根據統計顯示,現在在美國亞裔未婚的就佔了一半,真是令人吃驚。 Reason #1: You have a better body. We’ve all been there—you get into a relationship, and suddenly you’re trying out new recipes all the time and cuddling instead of exercising. Well, things tend to get worse with marriage. A recent Cornell University study found that women generally gain five to eight pounds in the first few years of marriage and unhappily married women gain an average of 54 pounds in the first 10 years. For the unmarried, though, the motivation to stay slim remains: “Singles look at themselves through the eyes of others and want to be attractive to potential partners,” says Susan Davis, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in New York City, “so they’re still ‘working on themselves.’” In short, being single is way better than any New Year’s resolution or exercise DVD to motivate you to stay in shape. Reason #2: You’re more likely to achieve great things. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you have the time, the quiet and the lack of familial responsibilities. In fact, your premarital motivation to excel in life may be biologically programmed. According to a study conducted at the London School of Economics and Political Scientists, male scientists who stay single longer peak in their careers later in life and tend to be more productive than their married counterparts. Researchers theorize that men, in general, may show off their talents to win the interest of women and then, once they’ve won a wife, get comfortable and do less. In fact, studies have shown that testosterone levels, which boost action, decrease after a man gets married and has children. So single folk should know they are primed to achieve — whether that means turbo-charging their careers or honing their rock-climbing skills — and get out there and work it! Reason #3: You do less housework. You know that saying about a tree falling in a forest and there’s no one there to hear it? Well, if you leave a sock on the floor but there’s no one else there to see it, does it really need to be picked up? If you’re a single woman, you can contemplate deep questions like this one because you have more free time. According to one study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, women do less housework when single than when married. Men, on the other hand, do more housework when unmarried (that’s probably because there’s someone picking up after them once they’re wed…). So the message here is for unmarried women to enjoy their less chore-filled life; fill those free hours with classes, good books, blabbing with friends—whatever makes you happy. Reason #4: You can do what you want with your money—including keep it.Go ahead: Splurge on that pricey moisturizer or that obscenely large plasma TV you’ve been lusting after. You don’t have to justify your purchase to anyone but yourself. Once you mix money with marriage, though, things change—and fast. According to a survey by SmartMoney magazine, 40 percent of women and 36 percent of men have lied to their spouses about a purchase. “When you’re single, your finances are your own,” explains Phyllis Chase, a Los Angeles–based psychologist and co-host of the radio show Shrink Rap. “When you’re married, you have to deal with different styles of spending and saving, and you may take on your partner’s debt.” And a marriage that doesn’t make it for the long haul can also have a major negative effect on one’s wealth. According to researchers at Ohio State University’s Center for Human Resource Research, during a divorce, men and women generally lose three-fourths of their personal net worth. Double ouch. Reason #5: You have better sex. Married couples may have more sex (approximately 98 times a year vs. singles’ 49), but singles have better sex. According to a recent study published in the British Medical Journal, married women are significantly more likely to report problems with their sex lives than single women. “People who are dating have better sex because it’s novel,” says Davis. “Married people have to relearn how to play. It’s natural for singles because that’s the nature of a courting relationship—they tease, they experiment, they explore.” Nature lends a helping hand, too. According to researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy, raging testosterone levels in both men and women makes the sex hotter during the first two years of a relationship. After that, other hormones take over—most notably, oxytocin, a bonding chemical, kicks in. While getting connected and comfortable is a positive step in a relationship, long-term lovers have to work harder to keep things hot in the bedroom. Singles, however, sizzle just the way they are. 。 Reason #6: You’re better rested and smarter. While snuggling up next to a warm body can be pretty fantastic, according to a survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, your bedmate can cause you to lose an average of 49 minutes of sleep per night. Sleeping two-to-a-bed just isn’t as restful as snoozing solo. Other studies confirm that singles generally get more rest — seven to eight hours of sleep a night — than marrieds, which enhances memory, mood and concentration, as well as allows your immune system to recharge. And, according to scientists at the University of Luebeck in Germany, creativity and problem-solving may directly correlate with getting enough sleep. In the study, participants were given a math puzzle; those who’d had eight hours of sleep or more before tackling it were three times more likely to get the right answer than those who slept less. So, singles, revel in the fact that you’re alert, rested and have that extra brain-power edge. Reason #7: You’re less depressed.Although the media often perpetuates the image of single people being down in the dumps, overall unmarried people tend to be happier than their married counterparts—if you’re a woman, that is. One report by the World Health Organization indicated that married women, especially ones with children, have a higher risk for depression than single women, and researchers at the University of London found that single women generally have fewer mental-health issues. “Marriage, in many ways, seems to benefit men more than women,” says Davis. “For women, there’s more of a loss of self.” And, of course, today’s women often feel like they need to do it all—have a career, take care of the kids and perform other traditionally “female” responsibilities. “People who aren’t married are still investing in themselves,” says Davis. “It’s not selfish—it’s giving to yourself, and that’s something married people can learn from single people.” Reason #8: You have better friendships.Significant others are a wonderful thing, no doubt, but friends count, too. And on that front, one study found that, when women get married and have children, they spend much less time with their friends—less than five hours a week, down from 14 hours. Singles, however, often have the greatest sense of friendship and community—which can actually decrease stress levels, according to researchers at UCLA. Here's another way to look at this: “Singles don’t rely on just one person to meet their needs. You don’t automatically know who you’re going to spend Friday night with,” says Sasha Cagen, author of Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics. “The plus side is that you have a lot of different people in your life and potentially a greater sense of social possibilities.” Reason #9: Your travel tales are enviable.Marrieds take the most vacations, dominating the market with 62 percent of all trips taken, but singles arguably go on more interesting trips. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, singles corner the adventure-travel market, engaging in activities like whitewater rafting, scuba diving and mountain biking. Being single and relatively footloose certainly allows you to expand your geographical — and personal — borders. “I have lived abroad, backpacked for close to a year, have been in love three times and much more,” says Courtney Davis, 27, a media-relations manager in Boston. “With every place and every person, my world has expanded.” Reason #10: You know yourself—and what you want out of a relationship. You’re a better catch now than you were at 20. You may have signs of, ahem, experience etched on your face, but that’s OK because you’re more interesting and more self-aware. Not only have you grown as a person, but you’ve probably been through the ringer a few times in matters of love and now know what you want—and what you don’t. Experts say that bodes well for future marital success and may actually decrease the likelihood of divorce. “When people get married young, they often feel like the other person will complete them, and they have trouble moving past that Hollywood myth,” explains Chase. “But maturity brings so much, because if you’re able to communicate who you are and what you want, the better your chances of having a successful marriage.” And that’s a wonderful message: Your single self is great... and should you find the right person and decide to marry, you’re more likely to thrive in that stage of your life, too. Dawn Yanek is the author of How to Find the Right Person in 90 Days and Women’s Best-Kept Secrets.

The following is an article written by Gail Todd, a free-lance writer who worked as a flight attendant for more than 30 years.  She really says it all!! Recently, I received e-mail from two readers who thought flying sounded like an exotic career and asked me if I would do it all over again.  So when I met two old flying cronies for lunch, I asked them the same question.

We put our heads together and came up with a training guide for anyone who is considering a career as a flight attendant and is looking for the adventure of air travel.

Here it is:

1.  Go to a resale store and find an old, navy suit that an army sergeant might have worn.    Add a white shirt and a tie.  Wear the same outfit for three consecutive days.

 2.  Go to an airport and watch airplanes take off for several hours.   Pretend you are standing by for them and they are all full.  Go home.   Return to the airport the next day and do the same thing again.

3.  Fill several large boxes with rocks.  Lift them over your head and place them on the top shelf of a closet.  Slam the door shut until the boxes fit.  Do this until you feel a disk slip in your back.

4.  Turn on a radio.  Be sure to set it between stations so there is plenty of static.  Turn on the vacuum cleaner and garbage disposal.  Run them all night.

5.  Remove the covers from several TV entrees.  Place them in a hot oven.   Leave the food in the oven until it's completely dried out.  Remove the hot trays with your bare hands.  Serve to your family. Don't include anything for yourself.

6.  Serve your family a beverage one hour after they've received their meal.  Make them remain in their seats during this time.  Ask them to scream at you and complain about the service.

7.  Scrounge uneaten rolls off the plates for you to eat two hours later when you're really hungry.

8.  Place a straight-backed chair in a closet facing a blank wall.  Use a belt to strap yourself into it.  Eat the rolls you saved from your family's meal.

9.  Ask your family to use the bathroom as frequently as possible.  Tell them to make splashing water a game and see who can leave the most disgusting mess.  Clean the bathroom every hour throughout the night.

10.  Make a narrow aisle between several dining room chairs and randomly scatter your husband's wingtips and loafers along the way.  Turn off the lights and spend the night walking up and down the aisle while banging your shins against the chair legs and tripping over the shoes.  Drink several cups of cold coffee to keep yourself awake.

11.  Gently wake your family in the morning and serve them a cold sweet roll.  Don't forget to smell their bad breath and wish them a nice day when they leave for work and school with smile.

12.  After the family leaves, take a suitcase and go out in the yard.  If it's not raining, turn on the sprinkling system and stand in the cold for 30 minutes pretending like you're waiting for the crew bus to pick you up.   Then go inside and wait by your bedroom door for another 30 minutes for an imaginary maid to make up your room.

13.  Change into street clothes and shop for five hours.  Pick-up carry-out food from a local deli.  Go back home.  Sit on your bed and eat your meal.  Set your alarm for 3:00am so you'll be ready for your wake-up call.

14.  Repeat the above schedule for three days in a row and you'll be ready to work your first international trip.

Several years ago, on a flight out of Dallas , my flying partner was half-buried in a cart trying to rescue the last few entrees from it.  A passenger asked her what she was doing.  Without removing her head from the cart, she responded:  "I'm looking for the glamour in this job."

And yes, I would do it all over again.  So would my flying partners.   Go figure!!

photo : space.comSummary:Email claims that Earth and Mars will have the closest approach in recorded history in August and will be a spectacular site for stargazers. Status:Was true in 2003, but is now outdated. Example:(Submitted, May 2006)
The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with your children and grandchildren. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN!

Commentary: Someone has recently resurrected and sent off this message and it is once again being passed from inbox to inbox. Although the year is not specifically mentioned in the message, recipients may naturally assume that it is referring to the current year, 2005. The events outlined in the message were more or less true back in 2003 although they were a little hyped even then. According to NASA, on August 27, 2003, Earth and Mars were the closest they have been for around 60,000 years. Mars was indeed a spectacular site in the night sky during several months of 2003. However, this fact is not quite as earth shattering as you might think. A 2003 NASA article on the subject explains that:
Much has been made of the fact that the August 27th encounter with Mars is the closest in some 60,000 years. Neanderthals were the last to observe Mars so favorably placed. This is true. It's also a bit of hype. Mars and Earth have been almost this close many times in recent history.
Mars will in fact pass close to Earth once again in 2005, although it will be at its closest on October 31st rather than August 27th. However, the red planet will not pass quite as close as it did in 2003. In 2003, Mars came within approximately 34 million miles of Earth. In late 2005 it will pass at about 43 million miles. In reality, this distance gap will probably not make a great deal of difference to casual observers on the ground. Mars will still be a spectacular and compelling site in the night sky in late 2005 in spite of the fact that it will not be quite as close to Earth as it was in 2003. What's more, these close encounters are not such uncommon events. Thus the claim that "NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN!" is a little misleading. It is true that the next time Mars will be as close to earth as it was in 2003 will be on August 28, 2287. In the mean time however, there will be plenty of other close approaches, so our children and our children's children are not likely to miss out altogether. Perhaps by 2287 some of our descendents will be observing the close encounter from the Martian perspective.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM CALIFORNIA WHEN:

1) Your monthly house payments exceed your annual income.

2) You drive next to a Rolls Royce and don't notice.

3) You don't know anyone's phone number unless you check your cell phone.

4) You speak Spanish, but you're not Mexican.

5) You begin to "lie" to your friends about how close you are when you know damn well that it'll take you at least an hour to get there (see below).

6) Getting anywhere from point A to point B,no matter what the distance, takes about "twenty minutes".

7) You drive to your neighborhood block party.

8) In the "winter", you can go to the beach and ski at Big Bear on the same day or mow your lawn in your shorts on New Years Day, and maybe sunburn.

9) You eat a different ethnic food for every meal.

10) If your destination is more than 5 minutes away on foot, you're definitely driving.

11) Calling your neighbors requires knowing their area code.

12) You know what "In-'N-Out" is and feel bad for all the other states because they don't have any.

13) You don't stop at a STOP sign, you do a California Roll.

14) You really can never be too rich or too thin or too tan.

15) You've partied in Tijuana at least 3 times and  you don't remember at least 1 of them.

Say NO to United Nations' abolishment of Traditional Chinese in 2008

March 24, 2006The Chinese language has many dialects spoken yet Mandarin has always been the official language. In Mandarin, there are two present types of writings: Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters. Traditional Chinese has been the official form of writing for thousands of years. And from it, the Simplified form was born.In recent decades, China’s effort in trying to make Chinese easier for both her youth and foreigners resulted in this push of Simplified Chinese. However, at the same time, Traditional Chinese is still studied and widely recognized. The purpose of Simplified Chinese was meant for an easier reading (with less characters) and less pen-strokes in writing characters. It is the attempt of making Chinese more phonetic rather than having many words pronounced the same. The two forms of Chinese have always co-existed peacefully for many years. The importance of Traditional Chinese lies in the fact that each character represents a very specific meaning. This is of extreme importance because it allows the reader to understand a written word even without the word being in context. Simplified Chinese, although convenient, fails to incorporate meaning into its characters. Many words of same phonetic sounds are replaced by a single character that possesses the same sound but lacks in meaning. The major downfall of Simplified Chinese is that it lacks meaning. Currently, historical texts are in Traditional Chinese, simply because one can read and understand based on the author’s choice of words) however, if Traditional Chinese is to be replaced by Simplified Chinese, one would not be able to understand these texts/writings because words have lost their meanings, they simply represent a way of pronouncing the texts. As time progresses, this would result in the lost of history and culture.UN's action to "unify" the Chinese characters and recognize ONLY Simplified Chinese will have devastating impact upon the Chinese language, culture, history. Internationally, Traditional Chinese would be forgotten and neglected, it would only be a matter of time before Traditional Chinese becomes the next “Latin”. (the dead language)Along with this lost of language, would be a culture and histories lost forever. Although Simplified Chinese is an easier way to learn Chinese, but it should not be the only form of Chinese written language. It should be a convenience, not a absolute. By allowing it to become the “official” writing, the Chinese language would be in regression.Petition:We, the undersigned, are appalled by the abolishment of Traditional Chinese in UN documents. This is an act of annihilation of the culture and history of the Chinese people. Both Traditional and Simplified Chinese are of extreme significance and should be recognized equally on the international level and by UN.

An Act to preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States' 成立在1918 年3月19 日。

在1974 年1月4 日,尼克森總統簽署了入法律,the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act of 1973。

(The United States-China Cultural Engagement Act of 2005 (S.1117))建議在未來五年中花費13億美元在美國各學校推廣中文教育。

Young Singers Spread Racist Hate
